we want to raise our son as a citizen of the world. not just a citizen of l.a or the u.s.a.. we want him to empathize with people in the congo, mexico, kansas, uganda, brazil, china, burma… the same as with with his neighbors. anyone have any good ideas on how to go about this? anyone been through this before? any good books or activities for it?

expose him to the world. take him to museums, and on trips around the globe where he’s doing something other vacationing. (My parents took me on trips to Mexico, and El Salvador to do mission work, and I learned more in those summers than I ever could have from a book, or ethnic food night) My dad got me my first subscription to National Geographic when I was 4, and I learned alot from that too. It made me want to ask questions about different cultures and learn about them. Just don’t put him in a privileged L.A. bubble.

What others said, read, travel if you can, but short of that read, go to cultural festivals, farmers markets, expose him to those areas outside of your day to day life.
